How the AI works with you

EssayGenius uses AI in several different surfaces, not one monolithic chat box. Each surface helps at a different level: sentence, paragraph, section, or whole-essay review.

Ghost text

As you type, faint text can appear ahead of your cursor. This is ghost text: a sentence-level suggestion based on the paragraph you are in, the surrounding essay context, and your active writing voice settings. Press Tab to accept it, accept the next word with the keyboard shortcut, or ignore it by continuing to type.

Ghost text is best when you already know what you mean and want momentum. It is not the right tool for planning your argument from scratch.

Inline AI tools

Select text in the editor and the floating toolbar can improve it, cite it, or open an inline AI prompt. This is useful for revising wording, tightening a claim, changing tone, or asking for a focused rewrite without leaving the paragraph you are working on.

Inline tools are for local changes. They do not replace essay-level review.

Assistant panel

The assistant on the right is where EssayGenius works across the whole project. It can read the essay, its sources, and related notes before responding. Use it for contextual suggestions, section launchers, source-aware questions, structure feedback, citation checks, and draft support.

If you want a first pass, a section draft, or a rewrite, the assistant can help with that too. Nothing is inserted automatically. You still choose what to keep and what to rewrite yourself.

Review and Deep Analysis

Once you have enough words on the page, EssayGenius can analyze the essay from a distance. Review mode runs cards like Reader Reactions, AI Grader, Argument Map, and Citation Audit. Deep Analysis goes broader and tries to surface the strongest sentence, the main structural issue, and the one improvement that would matter most.

The right way to think about it

• The AI can suggest or draft text, but you are still responsible for accuracy, citations, and whether that use is allowed by your course policy.
• It can be wrong about facts, emphasis, or interpretation. Verify sources and treat suggestions as proposals, not truth.
• It will not decide what your best argument is. That judgment still belongs to you.
• It is not a substitute for reading your sources and understanding the claims you submit under your name.
