Outlining saves time by separating the thinking process from the writing process. When you outline, you focus entirely on logic and structure. This prevents writer's block because you never have to wonder what comes next while you are in the middle of a paragraph. It also helps identify gaps in your research early on.

Most academic outlines follow a standard alphanumeric format. This includes an Introduction with a thesis statement, several Body Paragraphs containing topic sentences and evidence, and a Conclusion that synthesizes the findings. Each major section is typically marked by a Roman numeral.

Start by reviewing your prompt and finalizing your thesis statement. Next, group your research notes into three to five main categories. These categories will become your body paragraphs. Under each category, list the specific quotes or data points you will use to prove your point.

Avoid being too vague. A bullet point that simply says 'Introduction' is not helpful. Instead, write out your hook and thesis. Also, ensure that every single point in your outline directly relates back to your central thesis statement. If it does not fit, remove it.
