How to Cite a Website in an Essay

Mastering Website Citations

To cite a website in an essay, you must collect the author's name, page title, site name, date, and URL. You will then format this data into two parts: a full entry for your reference list and a brief in-text citation. The specific order and punctuation depend on whether you use MLA, APA, or Chicago style.

Step 1: Locate the Required Information

Before writing, scan the webpage for five essential elements. Look for the author at the top or bottom of the article. Find the page title (the specific article name) and the website name (the broader site). Locate the publication date or the 'last updated' timestamp. Finally, copy the URL from your browser's address bar. If an author is missing, look for a 'corporate author' like NASA or the World Health Organization. If no date is found, you will use the abbreviation 'n.d.' in APA or provide an access date in MLA.

Step 2: Format the Full Citation

Arrange the gathered information according to your assigned style guide. In MLA 9, the format is: Author Last, First. "Page Title." Website Name, Publisher (if different), Date, URL. In APA 7, the format is: Author Last, F. M. (Year, Month Day). Page title. Website Name. URL. Use a hanging indent for these entries, where every line after the first is indented 0.5 inches. Ensure the website name is italicized in both styles, but note that APA also italicizes the page title while MLA puts it in quotation marks.

Step 3: Create the In-Text Citation

Insert a parenthetical citation at the end of the sentence where you used the information, before the period. For MLA, use the author's last name: (Smith). For APA, use the author and year: (Smith, 2023). If the website has no author, use the first few words of the page title in quotation marks: ("Climate Change Trends"). Since websites do not have page numbers, do not include them. If you mention the author's name directly in your sentence (a signal phrase), you only need to include the year in APA or nothing in MLA.

Website Citation Examples

Example
### MLA Style
Works Cited Entry:
`Peterson, Lucas. "The Best Budget Travel Tips." The New York Times, 15 Jan. 2024, www.nytimes.com/budget-travel.`

In-Text Citation:
`Traveling does not have to be expensive if you plan ahead (Peterson).`

### APA Style
Reference Entry:
`Peterson, L. (2024, January 15). The best budget travel tips. The New York Times. https://www.nytimes.com/budget-travel`

In-Text Citation:
`Effective budgeting is the cornerstone of modern travel (Peterson, 2024).`

Common Citation Mistakes to Avoid

Avoid these frequent errors to maintain academic integrity:

  • Citing only the URL: Never just paste a link into your essay or bibliography. It provides no context and is not a valid citation.
  • Using the full URL in-text: Keep your in-text citations brief. Only use the author or title; save the long URL for the reference page.
  • Ignoring the 'last updated' date: If a specific publication date isn't visible, check the bottom of the page for a copyright or update year.
  • Confusing the page title and site name: The page title is the specific article name; the website name is the overall platform (e.g., "The Great Gatsby Review" is the title, Goodreads is the site).
