How to cite a book in MLA format
Book citations in MLA follow a straightforward format: author name (inverted), italicized title, publisher, and year. For books with editors, translators, or multiple editions, additional elements are included.
MLA book citation template
Last, First. Title of Book. Edition, Publisher, Year.
Tips for MLA book citations
- Italicize the book title. Use title case (capitalize major words).
- Include the edition only if it is not the first edition.
- The publisher name can be shortened (omit "Inc.", "Co.", "Press" in some cases).
- For in-text citations, use the author's last name and page number: (Morrison 42).
- If a book has two authors, list both: Last, First, and First Last.
