What is a Works Cited page?
A Works Cited page is the final page of an MLA-formatted paper. It lists every source you directly quoted, paraphrased, or referenced in your essay. The entries are arranged alphabetically by author last name and formatted with hanging indentation.
Works Cited formatting rules
- Title the page "Works Cited" (centered, not bold or underlined).
- Double-space all entries with no extra space between them.
- Use hanging indentation: first line flush left, continuation lines indented 0.5 inches.
- Alphabetize entries by the first word of each citation (usually the author's last name).
- Use the same font and size as the rest of your paper (typically 12pt Times New Roman).
Common Works Cited mistakes to avoid
- Do not number the entries.
- Do not separate sources by type (books, websites, etc.).
- Do not include sources you consulted but did not cite in the paper.
- Do not use "Bibliography" as the title when using MLA format.

A Works Cited page (MLA) only includes sources directly cited in your paper. A bibliography can include all sources you consulted during research, even if you did not cite them. MLA uses "Works Cited," not "Bibliography."
The Works Cited page is the last page of your paper. It begins on a new page after the conclusion. The page number continues from the rest of the paper (e.g., if your essay ends on page 5, Works Cited starts on page 6).
