Getting started
Using version history
Version history is the safety net for essay revisions. It keeps automatic save states as you work, and it also supports manual save points when you want to bookmark a draft before a risky edit.
Open the History section from essay settings
Inside the editor, open settings and switch to the History tab. From there you can review the save policy and jump into the full version history browser for the current essay.
Use automatic saves for routine backtracking
EssayGenius records automatic versions while you write. Those are useful when you want to recover wording from earlier in the day or undo a revision that went too far.
Create manual save points before major changes
If you are about to restructure the thesis, merge sections, or try a large AI rewrite, create a named manual version first. Manual save points stay easier to recognize later than a list of timestamps.
Preview, compare, and restore carefully
The history browser lets you inspect older content before restoring it. Restore is best treated as a deliberate rollback, not a casual toggle, so check the selected version before you replace the current draft.
A restored version becomes your live draft. If you are uncertain, create a manual save point first so you can move back again without losing the current state.
