What is EssayGenius?
Concept3 min read
EssayGenius is an essay workspace. It combines a focused editor, source management, writing voice tools, citation formatting, and multiple AI workflows in one place so you can research, draft, revise, and export without bouncing between tabs.
One essay, one workspace
- Editor. Write in the center of the screen with inline formatting, citations, ghost text, and selection tools.
- Project sidebar. Keep Structure, Sources, and Notes next to the draft. Sources includes your essay sources, reusable library, Find papers, and Zotero import.
- Writing voice settings. Build one saved voice profile from past writing, manage voice notes, and decide when AI drafting should use it.
- Assistant and review tools. Open the assistant for contextual writing help, use Structure for the live outline, and run review panels for bigger-picture feedback.
How people actually use it
A typical workflow looks like this:
- Start from a blank essay, a topic, or an uploaded assignment brief.
- Add sources manually, by DOI or URL, through academic search, or from Zotero.
- Draft and revise with ghost text, inline AI edits, assistant prompts, and evidence-aware suggestions.
- Run review or deep analysis, clean up citations, then export to the format you need.
Where AI shows up
- Ghost text. Sentence-level suggestions as you type.
- Inline tools. Improve or rewrite selected text in place.
- Assistant panel. Ask for feedback, source help, structure help, or draft support.
- Review and Deep Analysis. Check argument quality, citations, audience reaction, and big-picture weaknesses.
Important: EssayGenius can help generate outlines, sections, and draft text when you ask for that. You are still responsible for what you keep, how you cite it, and whether that level of AI assistance is allowed in your course.
