Your privacy and data
Your essays are yours. Here is the practical version of where they live, what AI features need in order to work, and how to export or remove data when you want to.
Where your essays are stored
EssayGenius is offline-first. Your essays live in your browser's local IndexedDB storage and remain available on that device even without a network connection. When you are signed in, the app also syncs essay data to the cloud so you can access it from other devices.
- Local copy: IndexedDB in your browser. It stays there until you clear browser or site data.
- Synced copy: your signed-in account can sync essay data to the cloud so the app can restore it on another device.
What's sent to AI
When you use AI features, EssayGenius sends the context needed to return that result. Depending on the feature, that can include part of the draft, the full essay text, source metadata, notes, or the current assistant conversation.
- Ghost text and inline edits use nearby essay context
- The assistant may use the wider essay, notes, and sources to answer essay-level questions
- Review and analysis features may use the full essay and attached research context
Need the legal details? Provider handling, retention terms, and policy language can change over time, so the Privacy Policy is the authoritative place to check the current legal wording.
How to delete your data
- Individual essays: delete them from the dashboard or essay controls.
- Local browser data: clear browser or site data if you want to remove the local copy from this device.
- Synced writing data: use Settings > Your Data to export a ZIP archive with a complete JSON backup plus CSV files for synced essays, versions, sources, notes, folders, library items, and profile preferences.
- Account deletion: use Settings > Your Data to schedule deletion. You can cancel during the 30-day grace period. After the grace period, synced account data is removed and final deletion cannot be reversed.
