Account & billing
Managing your account
Account management lives on the Settings page. Account-specific controls are split into Profile, Plan & billing, Security, Integrations, and Your Data. Writing preferences, Writing voice, and Accessibility live there too, but those change the writing experience rather than account ownership.
Profile
Profile lets you update your name and photo. Your email address is shown there too. Email/password accounts can request an email change from Profile after entering the current password and confirming the verification flow. Google-only accounts manage their email address through Google.
Plan and Billing
Plan & billing shows your current tier, usage, billing cadence, payment status, and next billing or end-of-access date. Paid accounts can manage payment method, open Stripe for invoices, cancel at period end, reactivate before access lapses, or resume after a pause when that option is available. Free accounts without a billing account see an upgrade path; if you previously paid, Stripe may still be available for past invoices.
Security
Security covers password changes for email sign-ins, linked Google access, and sign-out controls for other sessions. If you sign in only with Google, password changes stay managed by Google rather than inside EssayGenius.
Integrations
The current external integration in settings is Zotero. You can connect an API key, sync the library, import items into essays, and disconnect later without removing sources that were already added to a draft.
Your Data
The data section lets you export a ZIP archive of synced writing data and schedule account deletion. The ZIP includes a complete JSON backup plus CSV files for spreadsheet-friendly review. The export is available when you are signed in, online, and sync is clear. Essay-level document exports such as DOCX, PDF, Markdown, HTML, or bibliography export live in the editor and essay settings rather than on this page.
Delete your account
Account deletion is in Settings > Your Data. Before scheduling deletion, export anything you want to keep. Email/password accounts confirm with the current password. Google-only accounts may need to reauthenticate with Google. When you request deletion:
- Deletion is scheduled 30 days from the request
- You can cancel deletion from Settings > Your Data during the grace period
- Your essays and subscription stay available until final deletion
- After the grace period, synced account data is removed and final deletion cannot be reversed
Export before the grace period ends. Download any essays you want to keep before final deletion runs. Your local browser copy remains on this device until you clear browser or site data, but once cloud data is removed, it cannot be recovered.
