Exporting your essay

Walkthrough3 min read

EssayGenius has a fast export menu for the formats most people need at submission time, plus a deeper export area in essay settings for advanced plain-text and research-library formats.

1

Use the header export menu for the common cases

The header export control handles the main document formats: DOCX, PDF, and Copy to clipboard. Use these when you are preparing something to submit or paste elsewhere immediately.

2

Know when paper details are required

For APA 7 and MLA 9 essays, the exporter may ask for paper details before it builds the final file. That is how title-page or header metadata gets added to the exported DOCX or PDF instead of staying only inside the app.

3

Open essay settings for the rest

Essay settings include additional Pro export options for Markdown, HTML, plain text, and bibliography/source-library formats like BibTeX, RIS, and EndNote XML.

What carries over

  • Headings, paragraphs, and basic text formatting
  • Inline citations or footnotes, depending on the citation style
  • The bibliography, reference list, or Works Cited built from cited sources
  • Paper metadata collected for APA or MLA exports

What doesn't

  • Pending ghost text suggestions
  • Assistant chat history
  • Research-side notes and panel state

Always open the exported file once before submission. Check page details, footnotes, reference headings, and line spacing in the final destination app, especially if your institution has strict formatting rules.
