Importing from Zotero
Zotero integration is useful when you already maintain a library there and want to pull items into an essay without retyping metadata. EssayGenius treats Zotero as a source input path, not as a replacement for your essay-specific notes and citations.
Connect Zotero in Settings
Go to Settings > Integrations, paste a Zotero API key, and verify the connection. EssayGenius currently uses read access so it can load your library metadata without modifying anything in Zotero.
Sync your library cache
After connecting, run a sync. EssayGenius caches your Zotero items locally so the library is fast to browse from inside the editor.
Import items into the current essay
In the sidebar, open Sources, then switch to the Zotero view. Search or browse your synced library, then add the items you need. Imported items become normal essay sources, so you can cite them, attach notes, and use them in source review tools.
Know what sync does and does not do
Sync refreshes the library cache and keeps importable metadata current. It does not automatically insert new Zotero items into every essay, and disconnecting Zotero does not remove sources you already imported into drafts.
Zotero import preserves metadata from your library, but you should still verify relevance and read the source yourself before citing it in an argument.
