What is a bibliography?

A bibliography is a list of all sources consulted during research, whether or not they were directly cited in the paper. Different citation styles use different names: MLA calls it a "Works Cited" page (only cited sources), APA uses "References," and Chicago uses "Bibliography." Each style has specific formatting rules for how entries are ordered, punctuated, and styled.

Bibliography vs. Works Cited vs. References

  • Works Cited (MLA): Lists only sources directly cited in the paper.
  • References (APA): Lists only sources cited in the paper, similar to Works Cited.
  • Bibliography (Chicago): Can include all sources consulted, not just those cited.

Formatting tips

  • All entries should be in alphabetical order by author last name.
  • Use a hanging indent: the first line is flush left, subsequent lines are indented 0.5 inches.
  • Double-space all entries (MLA, APA) or single-space with a blank line between entries (Chicago).
  • Be consistent with one citation style throughout the entire document.
